An amazingly close look at the
real rainforest, with minimal interference. A
transitional neo-tropical jungle ranging from a humid rain forest to a
misty cloud forest at the higher elevations. About 1,350 acres, most of
them primary forest, dedicated to conservation. Rain Maker's
sole use is sustainable development. Less than 5%
of is used for tourist activities. In a one-mile trail and
bridge system a limited number of guided tours assures a minimum impact
on the environment. A few trails, hand railings, bridges and lookout
points have been created for the safe comfort and enjoyment of
visitors. Elsewhere, the jungle remains just as nature intended.
A system of trails following the contours of the Rio Seco corridor are
intersected by wooden bridges traversing the jungle to allow an
excellent view of the scenery. From the trails you should spot colorful
dart frogs, interesting butterflies, the lizard that walks on water
(basilisk), and splendorous birds such as toucans and trogons. The
system has 7 platforms positioned all at the same level for easy
access. The first platform starts at ground level, and as the slope
drops, the bridge raises, allowing observation of flora and
fauna within the canopy ecosystem. Many cascades and waterfalls, one of
which is utilized by visitors as a natural crystal- clear swimming pool.
From
Manuel Antonio there is an easy access to a range of
world-class surf breaks. Jaco, Hermosa, Esterillos and Dominical are at
a reasonably short distance. The little-known and spectacular Playa del
Rey is very close. Playitas and Bajo breaks are just outside Manuel
Antonio National Park. The water is a warm 78-82 degrees year-round.
The biggest surf occurs June through August, however the surf is
generally consistent at other times.
If you are at all interested in
birds, you know that most species are not as easily seen as pelicans
and frigate birds. But for those who make an attempt to find them, the
Manuel Antonio area harbors hundreds of surprises. More than 270
species, including migrants, can potentially be observed in the park
and the surrounding area extending to Quepos and the local airstrip.
Despite the image of beautiful
beaches that the name Manuel Antonio conjures up in most peoples'
minds, the majority of its bird life is to be found in the forest -
whether inside the park proper or in any decent patch of vegetation
around your hotel. Screeching flocks of parakeets and parrots impart a
decidedly tropical air to the birding here, as do the comings and
goings of at least 15 different types of hummingbirds, including
purple-crowned fairies, violet-crowned woodnymphs, white-crested
coquettes, and blue-throated golden-tails.
